Norham With Ina, Jens & Resa (In the Footsteps of Turner)
‘Norham With Ina, Jens & Resa’, oil on canvas 50cm x 40cm
This is the first view of the castle David had as he drove into Norham village with the German film crew from Gebrueder Beetz hence the title. Norham is on the English side of the river Tweed and it was from this side that Turner chose to paint; since that time however, river bank erosion and tree growth have meant that to get a view across the river to the castle it is necessary to paint from the Scottish side and for his major painting that’s what David did but this little canvas gives something of an idea of Turner’s view.
