Wild Boar Fell sits high up in the Pennine watershed near the little Yorkshire Dales market town of Kirkby Stephen. In this remote and beautiful region, many of the rivers that flow through the dales originate: the river Ure, the Swale and further North, the Tees and the Tyne. The weather changes fast up here and can hit hard.

Photographs can be useful when making paintings but there’s no substitute for being out in the landscape painting plein air or as in this case, making sketches to bring back into the studio. Here David is working very fast with watercolour and pencil to gather as much visual information as he can, but also soaking up the atmosphere that is specific to this place.

Wild Boar Fell is a striking hill in the Yorkshire Dales, England, standing at 708 meters (2,323 feet). It is located on the eastern edge of Cumbria, near the border with North Yorkshire. The fell is known for its distinctive flat summit plateau, which offers breathtaking views of the Howgill Fells, the Pennines, and the Eden Valley. Despite its name, there are no wild boars roaming the fell today—the name likely originates from historical sightings or associations with boar hunting.

The landscape is a mix of rugged moorland, grassy slopes, and exposed rock formations. One of its most notable features is the collection of stone cairns on the summit, which add to its remote and mystical atmosphere. The fell is a popular destination for walkers and hikers, with several routes leading to the top, including paths from Mallerstang and Cotegill Bridge.

Wild Boar Fell is rich in history and folklore, with connections to local legends and past agricultural practices. It is also home to diverse wildlife, including birds of prey and hardy sheep. For those seeking solitude and dramatic scenery, Wild Boar Fell offers an unforgettable experience in one of England’s lesser-known but spectacular landscapes.
