A painting from David’s Shropshire studio recalling a perfect summer’s day at Scrambledown Beach in Devon’s South Hams with David & Becky’s daughters Kate, Lydia and a group of friends.
David Says: The beach, with its soft golden sand and jagged rocks that jutt out into the sea, has always been a favourite of ours. There was something about the way the sunlight danced on the water and how the cliffs seemed to rise like sentinels, protecting the little cove, that made it feel like a special secret we shared, and indeed the little beach is hard to access; hidden away at the end of a long, steep walk-in where few tourists venture. Nearby, the popular towns of Salcombe, Dartmouth, Torquay and Totnes thronged with visitors, yet we almost had Scrambledown to ourselves.
We sunbathed, swam, and picniced on the wonderful produce from Kate’s garden and greenhouse with a bottle of chilled Vinho Verde and the day seemed endless and perfect like chilhood days.
Materials used: Michael Harding, Winsor & Newton, Jackson’s Professional oil, rags, sticks, fingers & cheap brushes (I like their unpredictability!)
